THE YEAR OF THE DRAGON

Happy New Year!  Last night we had our annual Chinese New Year celebration and it was wonderful.  As always, my in-laws spent all week prepping and cooking which resulted in a spectacular meal.  As soon as we walked into their house everyone swarmed around the food like moths to a flame.

I thought you might enjoy a glimpse into the Chinese side of my family.  I am such a lucky girl to be able to experience the Chinese culture so intimately and my children are so lucky to have one foot inside each culture.

Below is just a sampling of all the food they made…I was too busy enjoying it to photograph every dish.

P.S.  Can you believe my mother-in-law is 70?!?!?!?

CHINESE BROCCOLI

My father-in-law is an AMAZING cook.  Once a week we go over to my in-laws house for a home-cooked Chinese feast (we are so lucky!) and the table is piled with plate after plate of lovingly prepared dishes.  Somehow he is able to prepare vegetables in a way that showcases their natural flavor without any overpowering accompaniments.  His vegetable dishes are so darn good!

This is how my father-in-law makes Chinese broccoli…

INGREDIENTS

Chinese broccoli (I usually make one bunch)

Oyster sauce

~

My in-laws usually purchase a huge pack of Chinese broccoli and split it with me.  If you are unsure of where to buy it, go to your local Asian market and they will be sure to have it.  When you bring the broccoli home, soak it in water to ensure that it is clean and then cut 1/4 of an inch off the bottom of each stalk.

Place the prepared broccoli in the steamer for 5-6 minutes (until they are tender, but still retain some crunch).

Remove the broccoli from the steamer and drizzle some oyster sauce on top.  Serve immediately.
