HOMEMADE VEGAN RAW HIDE CHEWS

This past summer I received an e-mail/press release from a PR firm representing Excalibur dehydrators (I own one and love it) and they were highlighting the fact that their dehydrators could be used to make treats for your pets.  Seeing as we had just lost our beloved pup, I did not have the motivation to make any nor did I have a taste-tester even if I had made any.

Fast forward to the present.  We have now had our Goldendoodle, Dug, since September and after months of trying to find a food that worked for his sensitive tummy, Dug is FINALLY able to partake in some treats.

These vegan raw hide chews were so simple to make and HE LOVES THEM!  All you do is:

  1. Clean some sweet potatoes
  2. Slice the sweet potatoes length-wise 1/4″ thick
  3. Dehydrate the slices until they are hard (it took about 24 hours at 125 degrees)

Now that I know Dug digs these treats, my next batch will be a huge one…his cousin Rufus (my sister’s Newdle/Newfypoo…aka Newfoundland Standard Poodle mix) may even receive a package in the mail!

Do any of you make home made dog treats?

  1. I actually saw these for the first time at the local pet supply store in their refrigerator section. My rescue pound pup LOVES them and we keep them in the lowest shelf on the fridge door. He always looks to see if there are still any left. Too funny! Sometimes I sprinkle a little cinnamon on them before dehydrating. Good for you for making them. your pup will love you (extra) forever! 😉

  2. Your dog is living pretty high on the hog. I make sweet potato chews too. But they are for ME! Great workout for teeth and gums.

  3. Too funny I thought it was going to be a raw food recipe for humans. Oopps!

I’ve made them in the oven using the method described in this link and my dog loves them. http://veganeatsandtreats.blogspot.com/2011/12/doggie-treats-for-xmas-and.html

I’m going to try for my goldendoodle as well…just curious about what food your dog eats as mine is very picky and also has very sensitive stomach?

Thank you for sharing this delicious looking dog treat! I was wondering if you could tell me howhat long one of these usually lasts for your dog (chew time per piece).

I have to pibbles and they are chewers. They can take out a real rawhide (a thickER style one) in about 15 minutes, so I’m looking for a safe, vegan treat that will last longer than a few seconds in their powerful jaws; hoping this might be it! 🙂

    Thanks in advance!
